A Busy Harbor
Photo Album: Fuglafjørður Docks |
Sometimes the Fuglafjørður harbor is a very busy place, and at other times there doesn’t seem to be much going on. On Sunday and Monday, I didn’t see a single ship, but later in the week, it was very busy, and there were ten different ships here on Wednesday and Thursday. With the high price of fuel, I have heard that some ships are delaying going out fishing, waiting for a better market for the fish. At the moment, there are four ships still docked across the bay from me.
On a different topic, a few days ago the street lights in Fuglafjørður were turned off for the summer, and they won’t come back on until August. The sky is dim for an hour or two, but it doesn’t really get dark.

Is Havsbrun in Fuglafjordur itself? I assume so from the title ‘Fuglafjordur Docks,’ but wasn’t quite sure. Interesting about the streetlights, too. I would have thought it was too early in the year to turn them off.

Fuglafjørður is a large, horse-shoe shaped bay. My house is in the middle of the west side of the bay, the main part of town is at the top of the horse shoe, and the entire east side of the bay has docks and a variety of shipping and fishing companies. Havsbrún probably employs the largest number of people and has the largest facilities. One thing that they make is dried fish pellets that are used for animal feed and also in salmon fisheries. I think the large white bags being loaded by the forklift were dried fish pellets. Another company, Vónin, handles the huge nets used by trawlers. In the photo of Finnur Friða they are loading the trawling nets onto the ship. If I remember correctly, some of the nets are a half mile or a mile long.
Today the sun sets at 10:40 p.m., but because it is going down at such a shallow angle, it just barely goes below the horizon, and twilight lasts at least a couple of hours. Then it rises again at 4:09 a.m., but by 2:00 a.m. the skies are noticeably brightening. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I can’t tell the difference between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. During the darkest part of the night, the sky is dim, but not dark. I don’t think we can see stars this time of year.
