Guessing the Weather

I am not very good at guessing the weather here in the Faroe Islands, and the weather forecast from the newspapers or the internet is only a rough approximation of what may or may not happen.

Sometimes the weather is very local, and the weather will be clear in the Fuglafjørður bay, but just over the hill the Gøta bay will be filled with fog and clouds. Sometimes I can see different weather blowing by in the sound between the Fuglafjørður bay and the nearby islands of Borðoy and Kallsoy. Sometimes in just a few minutes time the weather will change from fog to blue sky to rain clouds and swirling waterspouts on the bay and then back to sunshine, and I have no idea what may happen in the next ten minutes.

Last weekend, during the choir festival in Gøta and Leirvík, I drove back and forth quite a few times. A lot of different weather can happen in a 5 or 10 minute drive, and in my small old car, I feel every bit of it. It was calm and clear at my house. I drove up the road leaving Fuglafjørður to a spot near the waterfall on the road above my house, and it felt like a small hurricane was trapped next to the mountain - buckets of rain, wind whistling through my car, trying to blow it off the road. Then suddenly it was calm again. Later the same day, making the same drive out of Fuglafjørður, another small hurricane was lurking along the same place in the road with another minute or two of high wind and heavy rain. I think it is a known fact that the weather is always worse in Kambsdal.

At home, we sometimes have strange weather forecasts, but at least I know what to expect. In the San Francisco Bay Area, it is common to have summer weather forecasts saying the the high temperatures will range from 65 to 95 degrees F, a range of 30 degrees. Those of us who live there know that the lower temperatures are in the fog along the coast and the highs would be in the hot inland valleys. My house, along the bay would be a comfortable 72 degrees F.

Marvelous photos, as usual, and the shot of the Gøta bay is just gorgeous. Thanks!

I have had cousin’s say about the weather in the Faroe Islands is that if you don’t like now just wait a couple minutes because it will change. It is very similar here in Washington, the weather changes quickly.
